The cottage

History

Born in 1857 in the small village of Baâlons, between La Bascule and Le Chesne, Eugène Houssière began as a butcher in Vendresse. But very quickly he accumulated money problems. He then embarked on an crazy gamble: with his whole family, in particular his brother-in-law Arthur Latreille, who was also in debt and came from the village of Les Alleux, they set sail for America.

From New York, the Ardennes tribe traveled to southern Louisiana, where a large French-speaking population lived. The two men threw themselves wholeheartedly into drilling, so that in 1901, near the town of Jennings, from one of their very first oil wells the precious black gold gushed out. The field was named the Jennings Oil Field.
